TODAY’S TUTORIAL:
As I was surfing the net, I stumble upon an internet sensation which is the Angry Bird. I saw the picture of this cute little munchkins and I talked to myself (because I was lonely) and said ”hey why not make my own version of Angry Bird” then poof I made an Angry Bird (but I’m not sure If it is angry I mean look at it, it’s smiling sarcastically). So today we are going to make an Angry Bird or Smiling Angry Bird.
Prep:
Difficulty: Beginner
Tools: Any Photoshop version will do as long as it has brush and pen tool on it (I’m using PS CS5)
Note: this tutorial is meant for those who has a little knowledge of Photoshop and if you are annoyed with the basic instruction just proceed to another instruction or Steps.
Step1: Setting up the file
Under Menu Click File>New make it 500px by 500px
Step2: Creating Outlines
After you made new canvas, you may proceed in creating a folder and naming it outlines
If you see a little icon folder under your layer palette click it. Rename your group folder by holding on control and click on the “Group 1” word. It will let you edit the name of the group folder and name it “outline”.
After you're done all that create a new layer under the “outline” group.
Now that you’ve created the new layer we will now start on creating outlines. Using pen tool under the tool palette we can create various types of shape at your own command.
If you've now click the pen tool make sure that you selected the paths. This is necessary since it will create strokes rather than shapes
Now that you have calibrated your pen tool to a specific task we can now start outlining.
This should be the shape of your path using pen tool. This is the body of the bird that we’re going to create.
Make sure that you choose a correct brush in the brush tool. The brush size and type will be used later when we stroke the outline
If you feel that it is hard to use pen tool without a guide you might need this. (Link)
While your pen tool is active right click on the path and choose stroke path. Remember to click the checkbox which says “Simulate Pressure”. The purpose of this option is to allow the pointy tips in our stroke (experiment if you like try not clicking the checkbox).
If all goes well and you followed my instruction it should look like this. To remove the paths double press ESC key.
To proceed with other outline just follow what the instruction above. Hopefully you now know the concept of pen tool and stroke path. There are still more stoke to do I will not show it one by one since it would cost as time. I will just give you brief steps of stroke.
Now create another layer inside the outline group folder.
Erase some parts at the top using eraser tool.
For the head create another layer. Remember every outline must be in another layer.
Now let’s create the eyebrows. Create a new layer again and using Rectangular Tool Press “M” key
Drag to form a rectangle shape and fill it using fill tool
Move the Black Rectangle and hold down Ctrl+T. Rotate it and resize it until it looks like this.
Right Click and click perspective adjust until it looks like this
Since the first eyebrow is done let’s duplicate and flip it to save time. To do this first you must clicked the layer of the eyebrow and then right click and find duplicate layer.
Since we have two eyebrows we need to flip the other one resize it a bit. To do this click on the second eyebrow layer which we crated earlier and hold down CTRL + T then right click one eyebrow in the canvas and find flip horizontal. Adjust distance until you achieve similar to this.
If you’re done with the eye brow and your happy with it create a new layer under the outline and make the eyes, tail and beak of the bird like this using those steps above(must have separate layer of tail, eyes and beak.
So this is the finished outline of the bird using only pen tool and it is now taking shape. Remember if you’re having problem with shape and size you can always trace it with this one (link).
Step3: Coloring
Since we’re finished with the outlines and stuff let’s now proceed to colouring our artwork. First we need to create another group folder so that our artwork is in order. To do this refer to the instruction above (If you skipped), after you’ve created the folder name it color and place it below the outline.
Now that we have our folder let’s begin by creating another layer below the color folderb. Using the brush tool cover the inside of the outline with this color #d6002d.
Let’s create another layer inside the color folder and above the first layer. In this layer we will color the eyes the white part of his beak, use this color #ffffff.
Almost forgot we need to put the abdomen and some details of our bird to do this make a new layer place it under the eyes layer which we created. After you made the layer click on the pen tool and make a path like this and right click on it and choose fill path make sure that the color of your for ground color is #e2c4a8.
Let’s add another detail for his eye. Create a new layer above the abdomen layer and using pen tool make a path like this and fill it with color #a80023
Create another layer above all layers for the beak and start brushing with this color #fbba1e at the top and this color #f59c1e at the bottom .
Almost done, let’s add some detailed. Using the Elliptical Marquee tool let’s fill the details with this color #a80023
Just few more details like the highlights and the shadow
For the shadow I used pen tool to make a path and fill it with black. I lowered the opacity in to 30% .
Like the shadow I also use the pen tool to trace this things fill them with white and lowered their opacity around 20%
And there you have it our angry bird. You could put background and things you like but the tutorial goes down here.
